Caring for your Topiary Plants - Cupressocyparis 'Castlewellan Gold'
Thank you for purchasing a plant from TopiaryShop.co.uk
Your plant has been carefully grown in the Northern region of Italy,
an area famous for its warm climate, fertile soils and of course,
growers of Topiary. It has then been hand selected from stock, and transported
to the U.K, where, for at least a year, it has been further clipped,
fed and watered.
Below you will find a description of your purchase, together with a
care guide.
We hope your plant will give you many years pleasure.
Upon delivery please remove any packaging from the plant. Water thoroughly,
preferably by standing the plant in a bucket of water for 10 minutes
or so, as the plant may have been in transit for several days.
If we havent carried out an installation for you, it is recommended
that the plant be repotted into a larger more permanent container as
soon as convenient. We recommend John Innes No 3 Potting compost.
Description
Cupressocyparis Castlewellan Gold: Conifer with beautiful
yellow foliage, emitting a lemon scent when crushed or cut. Evergreen
and fast growing. Happy in full sun or part shade. Tolerant of most
soils & climates and is suitable to be planted directly into the
garden provided sufficient water is available, and soils are good. Ideal
for coastal positions.
General Care
Trim new growth with sharp shears regularly to maintain shape of plant.
Once monthly is normally sufficient. It is important the growth is kept
under control and the plant is not allowed to grow out of shape. If
this does happen, trim little & regularly to restore.
Remove any unwanted growth on clear stems using secateurs.
Try not to allow snow to settle on the plant in the winter. The added
weight on the plant may cause misshaping. Dont trim when frost
is due. Brush out brown & dead foliage with your hand or shake the
plant. This will encourage new growth to appear.
Check for aphids in the growing season (they leave a black sooty substance
on the plant) and spray at the first sign of infestation. Aphids can
cause rapid damage to Cupressus, & the plant can take several seasons
to recover.
Watering
Water regularly; - always try to keep growing medium moist, especially
in the growing season, and during the winter months. It is essential
that the growing medium is not allowed to dry out. If this happens,
the plant will die and will not recover. As a guide, during the growing
season, a full can of water every other day or third day will suffice,
and during the dormant season, October March water twice weekly.
Just remember that it is hard to over water, so more is better than
less!
Fertilising
Remember that all living plants need food, and there isnt much
for the plant in tap water.
Fertilise monthly with a proprietary slow release or liquid fertiliser
during the growing season. Follow manufacturers application rates. The
best way to apply fertilizer though, is to dilute some into the water,
each time you water.
